Visible above the water’s surface in the upper reaches of the flooding caused by the Seaway, is the embankment that once separated the edge of the Galop Canal from the river. The Galop Canal carried shipping around the St Lawrence River rapids at Cardinal, Galop Island and Point Iroquois, part of a navigation system pre-dating the Seaway. The canals and lock infrastructure in this area was built, expanded and re-built several times between the mid 1850s and 1901. Ironically, each iteration – including the Seaway – was obsolete before it was opened. Shipping technology evolved faster than the engineers ever imagined. The Seaway has never carried the number of ocean-going ships or ever achieved the shipping tonnages the planners and politicians promised of it.
