The remains of the Roman Catholic churchyard in Dickinson’s Landing, Ontario. The dismantling and destruction of the lost villages included the churches and cemeteries. The descendants of those interned in the cemeteries – where some graves dated from the 1700s – were approached by the authorities to make difficult and heart-rending choices to either leave their ancestors in place and in peace or have them disinterred to the newly created St Lawrence Valley Cemetery between Ingleside and Long Sault. Some children remember hushed conversations between their parents and aunts and uncles agonizing over their decisions. Many graves remained. Heavy rocks and fill were dumped over these to prevent coffins or other remains from breaking loose and floating to the surface.
